Materia e Idea. Analisi storico-tecnica della carta all’epoca di Leonardo

17 September 2026

Researchers and scholars will meet on 21 and 22 September to explore the history and materiality of paper and its role in the study of Leonardo’s manuscripts

Paper, its production, its distinctive marks, and the information it can still provide to scholars today are at the heart of the workshop “Matter and Idea. Historical and Technical Analysis of Paper in Leonardo’s Time”, taking place on 21 and 22 September 2026 in Lamporecchio and Pescia.

The initiative is promoted within the framework of COST Action CA24143 – LEonardo’s Codex Atlanticus and other miscellaneous Folios: A Digital Reconstruction (LEAF) and is held under the patronage of the Municipality of Vinci.

The workshop brings together two days of discussion focusing on paper as a valuable source of knowledge for the study of manuscripts and graphic culture between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The programme combines art history, material analysis, and new research perspectives, with particular attention to Leonardo’s manuscripts and to the insights that can be gained through the analysis of their physical supports.

The first day, Monday 21 September, will be held at the Nuova Fondazione Rossana e Carlo Pedretti in Lamporecchio, from 3:30 to 6:00 pm. Following the institutional greetings and an introduction by Sara Taglialagamba, the first session, chaired by Emanuela Ferretti, will feature presentations by Claudio Calì, on watermarks as a tool for investigating Leonardo’s manuscripts; Mauro Mussolin, on the reconstruction of fragmented sheets through the case of Michelangelo; and Benedetta Spadaccini, who will discuss chain lines and laid lines in the Codex Atlanticus and new research perspectives.

The second session, chaired by Margherita Melani, will explore further research topics. Thomas Dalla Costa will discuss doodles, landscape, and deformation from Leonardo to Dürer and Titian; Ioannis Eliades will examine Leonardo’s fascination with the East through the case of Cyprus; while Edoardo Villata will present a “post-Pedretti” reading of folio 15777 of the Royal Library of Turin.

The second day, Tuesday 22 September, will take place at the Paper Museum in Pescia, where, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, Museum Director Massimiliano Bini will guide participants through the history of paper, from handmade production to industrial processes.

The workshop therefore provides an opportunity to bring together scientific research, knowledge of paper heritage, and the study of manuscripts, in a territory deeply connected to the history of papermaking and to Leonardo’s legacy. By fostering dialogue between different disciplines and methodologies, “Matter and Idea” highlights the materiality of the sheet as a fundamental element in understanding, reconstructing, and interpreting historical documents.

The event is part of the activities of COST Action LEAF, dedicated to the digital reconstruction of the Codex Atlanticus and other miscellaneous Leonardo folios, and offers an opportunity for scholars to exchange ideas on topics at the intersection of art-historical research, technical analysis, and new approaches to the study of manuscript heritage.
